Investors Forum in Havana

On September 1st and 2nd, the Cuba 2016 Energy & Infrastructure Summit was held in Havana, Cuba. This forum brought together approximately 80 foreigner participants interested in energy sector investment opportunities in Cuba.

The Cuban government established in its programmatic documents the need to move towards an energy matrix that is covered by 24% from renewable energy technologies by 2030. In the Havana forum, moreover, Rosell Guerra, Director of Renewable Energy of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, said that the government's intention was to give this change a "sense of urgency", making clear the will to accelerate the process as much as possible.

Senate Vote in Favor of Better Relations with Cuba

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee voted to include four amendments that favor further relations with Cuba, as part of an appropriations bill for the next fiscal year.

Among the most important amendments is the removal of the travel restrictions that prevent American tourists from visiting the Island. The amendment was introduced by Senators Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, and Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, and was approved by acclamation.

First Solar Project for Foreign Investment Granted by the UNE

Hive Energy is set to become the first British company to net a major PV project contract in Cuba.

At the end of May they were awarded by Union Electrica de Cuba (UNE) with a contract to deliver a 50MW project to the Island. The project is going to be developed in the Mariel Free Zone, a huge new port which has been designed to act as a regional hub for Cuba

Cuban Minister of Agriculture Visits the United States

A Cuban delegation, headed by the Minister of Agriculture of Cuba, Gustavo Rodriguez Rollero, concluded today his visit to the United States, at the invitation of the Department of Agriculture of that country.

According to the report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, the Cuban Minister held meetings with Thomas Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture, as well as the deputy secretary, Michael Scuse; and with the Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. The Cuban delegation visited places of interest related to the production and research in the state of Iowa and there they exchanged with farmers and experts.

Companies for Cuentapropistas

The international press has most recently focused on an alleged authorization enabling Cuban entrepreneurs to create small and medium enterprises. This originated after the the Communist Party of Cuba published a paper entitled: "Conceptualization of the Economic Model and Social Cuban Socialist Development National Plan for economic and social development until 2030. Proposal vision of the nation, axes and strategic sectors ".

T-Mobile Closes New Deal with Cuba

The American telecommunications company T-Mobile announced yesterday that they had signed an agreement for interconnection and roaming with the Cuban Telecommunications Enterprise (ETECSA). This agreement will allow greater communication between the US and Cuba and should allow an improvement in prices of voice calls as well as text messaging and roaming for those visiting the island, starting this summer.

First American Cruise Visits Cuba

Adonia Fathom, the cruise from Carnival, arrived today to Cuba, in a 7 days course that will include the cities of Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. It is the first time after 50 years that an American cruise will reach Cuban port, something that was limited by the US trade embargo on the island.

VII PCC Congress Concludes

Today concluded the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, the most important national political forum.

Article 50 of the Cuban constitution states:

Art. 50. The Communist Party of Cuba, “Martiano” and Marxist-Leninist, organized vanguard of the Cuban nation, is the highest leading force of society and the state, which organizes and guides the common effort toward the goals of building socialism and the progress toward a communist society.

Louisiana Trade Mission to Cuba

"For us the possibilities are limitless" (1) were the words of Ralph Abraham, U.S. representative for the 5th Congressional District of Louisiana, who returned from a trade mission to Cuba on April 9th. The representative had coordinated the trip with Arkansas Congressman Rick Crawford and businessmen from both states. In the mission, there was also Senator Francis Thompson, from the agriculture committee, who also mention the trade potential between the two countries.
